FROM THE
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
DEAR LINCOLNITES:
I’m absolutely blessed to serve as your National President during this season. As I reflect on my
longstanding relationship with Lincoln University, many memories come flooding in. My sixth grade class from Benton Elementary School in St Louis, Missouri visited LU on a field trip. My father told me he tried out for the 1934 LU football team. Can you believe that he was able to vote for me as I ran for national office earlier this year?
While living in Miami,
I worked with the Wallace and Wooten families to gather alumni in the region. Earl Wilson came to meet with us and share requirements for establishing a chapter. Nedella Foster and Dolla Hadley were staunch LU supporters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. At that time we hosted Carl Smith and Covese Silken/Cora Robinson for alumni activities. When I began serving with the Houston
chapter it became evident that we had to operate in a different format from that of a traditional chapter model. We explored having electronic meetings at agreed upon intervals, small groups working on specific projects and synergistic relationships with like-minded organizations. Since alumni have varied interests and
passions, incredibly busy schedules and unbelievable skill sets available for us to tap into, I’m convinced that we must meet potential alumni association members where they are. We must harness their passions and use their creativity to the fullest.
We have chapters that
function very well using the traditional chapter model and have for many years. I say, “Tank God for them!” What if we offered individuals “clubs” or “interest groups,” an opportunity to select one of the four activities we ask of established chapters and to run with that one activity successfully? We would encourage such individuals to pay national dues and make endowments to LU. Perhaps there are alumni
who don’t have the time or interest to function in a group setting at all. What if we asked them to select
whatever way they want to work for the benefit of LU and communicate with us electronically? I see many synergistic possibilities. 2016 is full of opportunities. How can we
get LU alumni and friends of LU to participate in sesquicentennial activities, nationally and internationally? How can we work toward record attendance and participation at our national convention in New Orleans? Remember the past. Move into the future. I’m excited about all that will happen!
