Dr. Albert Essel Appointed as New Dean


Te new Dean of the College of Agriculture, Environmental and Human Sciences is Dr. Albert Essel, who was selected for the position aſter a national search. Formerly of Dover, Delaware, Essel has served as the Associate Dean for Extension in the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences at Delaware State University. Essel has extensive experience in working with 1890 land-grant universities. His past experience has included work at Ft. Valley State, State University of New York and Virginia State University.


Lincoln University Professor Recognized for Excellence in Teaching


Dr. Janet Long, Associate Professor of Nursing, was the 2015 recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Long is in her 22nd year as an employee of Lincoln. She is the only faculty member of the Department of Nursing and Allied Health to be identified by the National League of Nursing as a Certified Nurse Educator.


Success Continues in Lincoln’s Nursing Program


Dr. Anne Heyen, Assistant Professor of Nursing, was appointed by Governor Nixon to serve on the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Te nine member board oversees licensure, education and discipline of nurses throughout the state. One hundred percent (100%) of the main


campus associate degree nursing students, who graduated in May, 2015, passed the NCLEX-RN licensure examination on their first attempt.


Kansas City Alumni Receive the Blue Tiger Award


Tis special new award is given by the


Kansas City Alumni Chapter to graduates of Lincoln University who have shown an ongoing interest in the university and have given consistently of the time and finances. Te 2015 award recipients were Mr. Ollie Gates, Dr. Cortez Bradley and Senator Yvonne Wilson.


Educational Enrichment Scholarship Presented


Te Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Xi Tau Omega Chapter presented enrichment scholarships at its 23rd Annual Enrichment Scholarship Program. Te Frenchye C. Taylor Education and Math Scholarship was presented to Juanita Stephens, Lincoln University. Te scholarship is named in honor of the sorority’s first Golden Sorority Member, Frenchye Taylor ’53.


Blue Tiger Athletics Club Membership on the Rise


“Te Blue Tiger Athletics Club is the fundraising arm for the Department of Athletics and represents a growing presence at athletic events. Chris Jones, Blue Tiger Athletic Club Executive Director is pleased to note that membership is well over 100 and growing. “I’ve always thought that athletics is the front porch to the institution,” says Jones. “When athletics does well, it’s good for the entire university. It also gives the community a chance to see our student athletes, who are outstanding students, as well as talented athletes.” Te club holds tailgates and hospitality


events at football and basketball games sponsored by local merchants including: Central Bank, Hawthorn Bank, Mid- America Bank, Eastside Walmart Store, Sam’s Club, Schulte’s Fresh Food, Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce, Hy-Vee, Fechtel Beverage Company, H.H. Scheppers Distributing Company, Pepsi Cola, Prison Brews and Millard Family Chapels. Club officers are: Victor Pasley, President; Dennis Mueller, Vice President; Donna Deetz, Secretary; and John Schulte, Treasurer.

Lincoln University Meets Required Performance Criteria


For the second year in a row, Lincoln University met all five of its “performance- based funding criteria” required by state law. Tat will mean additional funding in LU’s state appropriation for the 2016-17 budget year that begins July 1, 2016. Missouri’s Higher Education department


notified LU officials the Jefferson City school met its five targets:


• Increasing the first-time freshmen successfully completing 24 credit hours in their first academic year, (increase from 32.2% to 36.8%).


• Raising the first-year retention of first- time, full-time students who live in the school’s residential halls from 37.7 % to 43.3%.


• Increasing total degrees awarded (with weighting for the science, technology, engineering and math — or STEM courses) from 1,574 to 1,590.


• Improvements in the assessment of general education.


• Te percentage of the school’s total expenditures spent on LU’s “core” mission.
