Joseph Watkins Chief of Staff to the President
JOE WATKINS ARRIVED ON THE CAMPUS of Lincoln University to start his new job on August 17, 2015. In a matter of minutes, Watkins was absorbed in a fast-paced schedule, which introduced him to co-workers and student leaders, taught him how to find his way around campus, showed him where to find supplies and Lincoln t-shirts, welcomed him to Mid-Missouri, shared university history, and assured him that there is a group of faculty, staff and students who regularly gather to play basketball. Although his office is in Young Hall, Watkins
is generally on the move. “What I enjoy most about my job is the exposure across all levels of the university,” he says. “I didn’t realize how much information a university holds. Although I spend a good deal of my time on community relations, I find myself involved in all aspects of the university.” Watkins divides his job responsibilities into three primary areas: 1. Serving as Dr. Rome’s aide and assisting with logistics; 2. Working on special projects with a high focus on community initiatives; 3. Developing marketing and sponsorship opportunities for athletics. Watkins completed his bachelor’s degree in sports management,
with a minor in business, at North Carolina Central University in 2012. “As a college freshman, I chose my major because I wanted to do work that I would always love. I was an athlete and loved sports. It was the perfect major for me.” Watkins also served as a resident assistant (RA) and was a member of the National Residence Hall Honorary. Watkins was also designated as a Chancellor’s Scholar

at NCCU and served as the President of Rho Phi Lambda, a recreational sports management fraternity. He became acquainted with Dr. Rome and stayed in touch aſter he graduated. Watkins completed an athletics compliance/
recreation internship at Duke University in 2012 and in 2013 he worked for the university as the Brodie Recreation Center Facility Monitor. He moved from NCCU to Ohio University where he completed a dual master’s degree program in business administration and sports administration (2015). SportBusiness International recently cited the Ohio University program the #1 American Postgraduate Sports Course in the country. It has an international following and
global influence. Watkins brings to Lincoln the kind of skills which will help its programs grow. Asked about future plans, Watkins says perhaps a PhD and
teaching are on the horizon; the number of sports administration opportunities is growing; but Watkins is intrigued by his work in university administration. Beyond his interactions with students and community leaders, Watkins has enjoyed his contacts with alumni. “I think we became the Harvard of the Midwest because of alumni involvement, and to make our return back to that level, we need more alumni invested in giving their time, talent and treasures,” he says. Watkins is a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia and the youngest
of 12 children. His favorite past times are weight liſting, playing basketball and reading Yahoo News. He can be reached at
