the proposal that LU deed a piece of land to the club. “That was also about the time we learned that Dr. Rome had attended the Boys Club in Georgia when he was growing up. The agency holds a special place in his heart,” said Johnson. Johnson, who is a native of Jefferson City, took on her role with

the Boys and Girls Club as a personal challenge. “As a mother, I saw the obstacles our kids have to survive. My immediate thought was that we have to let the community know what’s going on here and the value of the club in the children’s lives,” she says. “Right now, we are serving 400 children a day (grades K-12) in seven locations.”

“When we talk about all the opportunity, we need to say that

none of it would be possible without Dr. Rome. His idea is his gift, and it will be one of his biggest legacies,” says Johnson. My goal is for the children of Jefferson City to walk on to Lincoln’s campus as a child of the Capital City Boys and Girls Club and to walk off the campus as a graduate of Lincoln University.” The Railton Trust has a long connection with Lincoln

University. There is an art gallery in Richardson Fine Arts Center named for the Railtons. Frank Railton was a past president of Exchange Bank (now Hawthorn Bank).
