FACULTY RETIREMENTS
Dr. Richard Dalton If It Is To Be, It Is Up To Us! It takes a community.
Aſter 30 years of service to Lincoln University and its students, Dr. Richard Dalton retired at the close of the spring 2015 semester. He began his work at LU in 1985 as one of two faculty members who filled a new position for health and physical education. In 2001, with Dalton’s leadership, the Wellness Program was officially added to the university’s curriculum. Since then, nearly 100 students have graduated with Wellness degrees. Dalton says a degree program in wellness is not uncommon. “It’s an engaging experience for students,” he says. “Aſter graduation, they have moved into positions in health and fitness centers, nursing homes and senior centers, YMCAs, sports complexes and Special Olympics programs, to name a few.” Looking back on his Lincoln years, Dalton says “I just felt like
I was in the right place.” On the campus and in the classroom, Dalton was known as a person who was unafraid to confront ideas, experiences and the status quo. “Tis has been a most fulfilling career. I can’t imagine having this kind of quality experience any place else,” says Dalton. Dalton is a 1966 graduate of Southern Methodist University in
Dallas, Texas. As an SMU student, Dalton took part in the 1965 march in Selma, Alabama. Some 40 years later, Dalton received the “Keeper of the Dream Award” at Lincoln’s Martin Luther King celebration. “I treasure that award. I had dinner with Dr. King
during that bus trip to Selma,” he says. “It’s as we sometimes say – ‘it was meant to be.’ ” Prior to entering
graduate school, he served for nearly four years as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy. He completed a second bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a PhD in Health Education at the University of Missouri. His history also includes volunteer Christian ministry from 1975 – 2000. He has been involved with the Jean Houston Mystery Schools and Social Artistry since 2001. Dalton plans a busy retirement schedule. He is working on a new
book and describes it as “a book of provocative parable cards.” Te trailer for Dalton’s book is “Meme Wars, Pathways to Peace for your Mind and the Planet.” He explains that memes are contagious ideas that mutate every time they get transmitted. Te man who biked to campus with his Earth Flag flying behind
will be missed, but his lessons have changed lives. Dick Dalton (
daltondster@gmail.com) and his wife, Marsha, have one daughter and two grandchildren.
Mr. Ernest York Translating the computer language more than 30 years.
“Mr. York was a dedicated employee of the department and the university for 30 years from 1985, aſter serving in the Army, to 2015. He had completed a BS degree in Mathematics and an MS degree in Computer Science. He had been teaching computer science and programming courses. He was an excellent teacher and students liked his style of teaching. Mr. York was nominated for the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009. Mr. York was a well-respected member of the department, very knowledgeable in the academic policies and it is hard to find a replacement for him. Overall, Mr. York served Lincoln University well and his retirement is a loss to the department. We wish him a very happy retired life,” says Dr. Sivanandan Balakumar, Department Chair.
