OBRIE AND CORA (GREEN) SMITH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND REPRINT FROM WINTER 2015

OBRIE AND CORA SMITH ’63 and ’63/’70 established a new scholarship at Lincoln University early in 2014 with a giſt of $75,000 and a three-year match challenge to the Lincoln University Foundation. Focused on student leadership development, the Obrie and Cora Smith Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to African American men and women who have been selected for either the Infantry Scholars Program or the Women’s Leadership Academy. Founders and owners of ms. C’s Soppin’ Good BBQ Sauce®, the Smiths

understand a recipe for success. Te arrival of Dr. Kevin Rome as the university’s 19th president was a key ingredient in the Smith’s decision to create a scholarship at their alma mater. Obrie says, “We have decided in the winter of our years that we must focus on LU’s students. It is our hope that our level of giving will inspire others to give.” Teir excitement about the new scholarship is paralleled by their work to honor

Dr. Willis Byrd. In 2012, a committee was organized to focus on recognition of Dr. Willis E. Byrd, one of Lincoln’s most esteemed professors, who served the university from 1949 - 1988. Smith, who chairs the committee, reports that a bust of Dr. Byrd will be placed in Page Library in late spring 2016. Te Smiths are the proud parents of two giſted sons, Obrie III and Kyle. In 1989,

the family moved to North Carolina. In 2011, aſter years of research and testing, ms. C’s Soppin’ Good BBQ Sauce became a reality. Te Smiths produce, bottle and sell the sauce. It’s available online (www.soppingood.com).
