Lincoln University Women’s Resource Center Addresses Needs of Female Students

A

new program has been established to meet the unique needs of Lincoln’s female student population. Tammy Nobles, an alumna of Lincoln University serves as

the first Director of the Women’s Resource Center, aſter nearly a decade giving leadership to the Office of Student Activities. President Kevin Rome says creating strong bonds

is key to collegiate success for some women. “We have found young women, very much like young men who are served through our Infantry Scholars Initiative, have very specific needs. Te focus of the Women’s Resource Center will be to create relationships. We know that many women thrive with good support systems in whatever they do. Te center will help our students

thrive both academically and socially,” says Rome. Dr. Jerome Offord, Dean of Administration and Student Affairs, adds that the current administration prides itself on being truly student-centered.” It is important to the entire university family that we meet our students where their needs begin,” says Offord. “Female students need to find people and spaces where they can connect.” Tammy Nobles, recalls that she and Heather Robinson, Program Coordinator, moved into B-11 Young Hall in July. “Tings are going very well,” she says. “We began serving students individually, the first week of classes in August. Right now, we have a freshman cohort of 28 young women, but many of our events have served 60 or more. We offered Etiquette Fusion for all freshmen as part of orientation.” Other events sponsored by the center include yoga, a Female Summit, Cupcakes and Conversations. Nobles says “On Wednesdays we sponsor Women Career Wednesdays to encourage attention to business attire. WRC staff and students participated in the Rape, Aggression and Defense course offered by Cole County Sheriff’s Office, LUPD and JCPD. Interns from the Counseling Center work with us on a program we call “Got the Blues?” It covers topics such as homesickness, depression, relationships and topics that may be stressors. We also have built a relationship with the Career and Academic Support Services to connect students with tutoring and career development. Collaboration with the Infantry Scholars Initiative is ongoing. Te two groups cooperated to provide About S
