On fall nights and winter mats alike, Deegan Mitchell has built demanding worlds, anchoring the defense as a center back in soc- cer and stepping alone onto the mat as a wrestler. The contrast is sharp, but for Mitchell, it is exactly the balance that has shaped him into a state champion and a leader.
“It gives me the chance to be a leader.” gravitated toward responsibility. In soccer, he values the trust of teammates around him. In wrestling, he embraces the isolation. “With wrestling, if you lose, you have no one to blame other than yourself,” he said.
It is that accountability that fuels his philosophy on success. For Mitchell, talent is not the separator. Time is.

That mindset carried him through adversity. As a sophomore, Mitchell strained his hamstring just a month before the state tour- nament. This year, he battled through a strained LCL on the doorstep relentless idea: get better, even if it is just a little. “The constant thought of getting one percent better each day,” he said. “It does not matter how much better, just better.”
