qualifying for the state tournament as a freshman. But basketball is her game. Ava is tough, physical, talented, and one of the most dominating basketball players in the state. She was named the Class 2 Player of the Year. At 5’ 10”, she ruled the paint, going against bigger players every night. Ava averaged a dou- ble-double both as a junior and senior, scoring 18.4 points a game 1,963 career points and 1,236 rebounds. Those are huge numbers. She also developed into a very good 3-point shooter. So, who’s the best from beyond the arc? According to Dane, “I’m a better 3-point shooter than Ava, no doubt about it.” “I would say Dane and I are pretty even on shooting, even though he might say he’s better,” countered Ava. “I do hold a state free throw shooting record in the MSHSAA record book (16/16 in a game).” Competitive and alike in many ways, Ava and Dane are also very
while Ava tends to be more reserved in her personality. Even with work ethic, humble personalities, shared faith, and the support they continue to give each other.
The Schlotzhauer twins are blessed with strong support from home. “My dad and mom both instilled in me the love of sports,” said Ava. “My dad really inspired me and pushed me to be my best, and
Numerous coaches and teammates played a part in this athletic journey. For Dane, it was Coach Duke and Coach Dean in football. For Ava, it was Coach Culpepper, along with travel team coaches from the Wichita Shockers, Rage, Columbia College, and Phenom. And oh yes, that Tipton Lady Cardinals assistant (and dad), Justin Schlotzhauer. through the Tipton Rec Association,” remembered Justin. “It really felt like having more than one daughter on the team. Since their freshman year, they were determined to make it part of their legacy to win a state championship at some point in their careers. It was such a special group of girls.”
And watching that historic football state championship run was another memory of a lifetime for mom and dad.
“It brought back many memories of these boys from when they were younger. As the minutes ticked away, those young boys seemed to transform into young men right in front of us as they a dream come true, not just as a parent but for the entire Tipton community that had supported them along the way.” No one can appreciate how special this journey was for twins Dane and Ava more than their parents, Sarah and Justin.
