HEAVY CIVIL $25 MILLION TO $50 MILLION
Needles Tird Main Track Project” The BNSF Needles Third Main Track Project was a highly complex job that involved building approximately 29 miles of a third rail line next to an existing one. Granite Construction’s scope included excavating a large quantity of dirt and granite rock, extending 48 culverts, placing 651 steel piles, constructing 50 new bridges and two crash protection walls under I-40, and more. Te project’s location in a sensitive environmental area and the need to manage
a workforce in a remote desert environment, all while minimizing disruption to existing train operations, posed unique challenges. Te team faced significant daily risks relating to the project’s location along the
busiest BNSF corridor in the nation, with one train passing by every 10-15 minutes. Tis heightened the complexity of coordinating the delivery and staging of the 548 precast elements required to build 50 bridges with limited right-of-way. Granite overcame these challenges and others to complete the project on time and on budget. Also selected as finalists in this category were: Myers & Sons Construction for
“Lytton Rancheria New Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Plants De- sign-Build,” Griffith Company for “Confluence Chokepoint Relief Program (Phase 1): Te Diamond Bar Golf Course Project,” and Skanska USA Civil for “SR-60 Moreno Beach Dr. Intersection, Phase 2.”
