COMMUNITY SERVICE

Inc. for “SOMA Street Tree Nursery Site Improvements” Yerba Buena Engineering & Construction worked with San Francisco Public Works (SFPW) and Caltrans to transform a trash-strewn homeless encamp- ment lot between two downtown freeway ramps into a beautiful nursery to raise street trees for planting around San Francisco. Te nursery, operated by the SFPW Bureau of Urban Forestry, is growing

tree species suited to San Francisco’s diverse microclimates. It is contributing to increasing the urban tree canopy in neglected neighborhoods and serving as a hub for a workforce development program that trains disadvantaged individuals for jobs in urban forestry. Initially conceived as a simple tree nursery with a rehabilitated trailer, the

project was significantly expanded due to grant funding that was secured. Necessary redesigns created schedule challenges, as the project had to be finished in time for an international summit scheduled in San Francisco. By expediting delivery of long lead items and extensive overtime work, Yerba Buena met the schedule to successfully deliver this important community project. Also selected as a finalist in this category was Swinerton Builders for “Kaiser Permanente Watts Medical Offices & Watts Counseling and Learning Center.”

WINNER Yerba Buena Engineering & Construction,

Yerba Buena Engineering & Construction, Inc. received a Constructor award for SOMA Street Tree Nursery Site Improvements.
