CONSTRUCTION EDUCATION FRIEND AWARD Emiliano Sanchez, Coordinator of CTE Trades & Apprenticeships, Oakland Unified School District Emiliano Sanchez is the coordinator of Career Technical Edu- cation (CTE) Trades and Apprenticeships with Oakland Unified School District. For 32 years, Sanchez has served the students of Oakland as an educator, school administrator and work-based learning coordinator. Sanchez supports hands-on learning, the development of CTE pathways, and integration of internships into youth pathways in 18 high schools that serve a total of 9,500 students. His work includes coordinating Hands-On Skilled Trades Fairs annually for OUSD and neighboring school districts and a summer skilled-trades internship program. Sanchez elevates the value of manufacturing, technical and


trades careers by forming strong partnerships with skilled trades training centers, trade unions, manufacturers, community col- leges, and their CTE programs, the City of Oakland and general contractors. Tese efforts provide exposure and inspiration for both youth and educators to lucrative construction career options. Trough his work with AGC of California and Build California,


Sanchez has connected with Swinerton, Turner Construction, Cahill Contractors, and McGuire and Hester. He enlists the four contractors to give classroom presentations and connects them to high school students ready to work in construction.


SKILL, INTEGRITY, RESPONSIBILITY (S.I.R) ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Jose Mejia, Former Director of the California State Council of Laborers Jose Mejia is a 42-year member of the Laborers (LiUNA) and has been retired since March 2021. He served as director of the California State Council of Laborers from 2004 to 2021 and director of research from 1999 to 2004. As director, he engaged in multiple endeavors including


policy, regulatory affairs, and health and safety issues affect- ing LiUNA members and all workers. Mejia’s work with the Department of Transportation was instrumental to ensuring employers doing business with Caltrans were reimbursed when additional safety protections were provided to workers but not required in any work specifications. Over the years, Mejia has worked with AGC of California


to ensure contractors were appointed to key boards and commissions – guaranteeing members have integral roles in the construction industry’s decision-making process. Mejia is known for his ability to balance industry issues between associations and independent employers. He advocated for important legislation throughout his career including the addition of industry funds to prevailing wage laws co-sponsored by AGC of California and LiUNA.
