INVESTING IN OUR INDUSTRY
New Emerging Leaders Academy Prepares to Launch
BY CAROL EATON A
GC of California has announced plans for the 2023 launch of an exclusive new professional
development and mentoring-focused program targeting entry and mid-level construction professionals: the Emerging Leaders (EL) Academy. Drawing on extensive input from
current EL members and other con- struction professionals and set to roll out later this year at CONSTRUCT 2023, the newly envisioned program is the brain- child of AGC of California’s EL Steering Committee and the AGC of California Construction Education Foundation. The EL Academy will offer enhanced membership value for participants and their sponsor companies by combining a concentrated education and training component with a focus on activating and increasing industry mentorships. “As our EL board was strategizing
how to get more people engaged while also creating value-added programs that
would bring more tangible benefits, we started to shift the focus to ‘how do we make our program exciting or valuable enough’ that engagement follows,” com- mented Megan Calm, 2023 chair of the EL Steering Committee and marketing manager for TYLin. “This invested pro- gram is what we are shifting towards, with the goal of incentivizing what it really means to be an Emerging Leader.” AGC of California Director of Train- ing & Education Kendra Bilo explained that the “typical” demographic for individuals in the EL program have been working in the industry for an average of five to 10 years (or less). “They are usually super busy and may be stretched kind of thin. We want to make this a very transparent program in that it does come with the expectation of a time commitment,” she noted. “The individual would be sponsored by their member company that fully supports this investment in their employee.”
