Justin Wheaton

Currently an environmental health and safety director at Skanska USA Civil West, Wheaton spent the first 14 years of his career as a union carpenter before transitioning into a health and safety role about nine years ago. He volunteers with the

San Bernardino County Sheriff as the Commander of a Cave and Technical Rescue Team and has served as chair for the Mountain Rescue Association. Asked why he got involved in the AGC of California

Safety & Health Council, Wheaton commented, “My passion for innovation and forward-thinking has al- ways drawn me to the Safety & Health Council. It is a great feeling to have the opportunity to influence the construction industry overall, and there is no better way to do that than through this Council.” He is excited to be part of the 2023 leadership team, which he said “is a perfect blend of the work sectors we represent, covering building, civil infrastructure and mechanical systems. We have a depth and breadth to be extremely valuable to the Council and AGC of California. I am excited to see what we can provide the Council this year.” What would he like to see SHC accomplish in the year ahead? “As the work the industry is performing becomes more complex, and our social and economic environment more complicated, I would like to see the Council continue to put energy into being a resource for our AGC of California members,” he said. “Te Safety & Health Council is well-poised in the digital age to develop, research and evaluate new technologies and resources to make immediately available to members facing difficult safety challenges.”

Devin Caringella

As Clark Construction’s Western Group safety director, covering the region from San Diego to Seattle, Devin Caringella oversees over 25 safety professionals and 22 active construction projects. He works closely with Clark leadership in

the execution and implementation of safety programs and initiatives. Devin is passionate about relationship-based safety,

engagement of team members with trade partners, and acknowledgement of safe work activities. He has helped to develop and deliver programs such as the Chase Center Golden State Warriors Arena, Block 5 high-rise in San Francisco, and UCSD North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood. Currently he is supporting project teams at the LACMA Building for the Permanent Collection, SDSU Aztec Stadium, and the New Seattle Convention Center. Serving as a member of the SHC for several years,

Caringella said he decided to get involved on the SHC leadership because he wanted to take a more active role. “I am looking forward to partnering with my industry peers on creative ways to engage with construction workers, including through education, recognition and reward,” he noted. Caringella especially wants to see the SHC continue to tackle the major issue of mental health in the year ahead. “Mental health is an ongoing challenge in the construction industry,” he said. “AGC of California has many resources we can utilize for education and awareness.”
