BUILDER $75-200 MILLION
Facility” Te LAX Airport Police Facility (APF) consolidates the 1,100-person Airport Police Division, previously dispersed over nine separate areas around the airport, into a single new ground-up facility. Hensel Phelps led the progres- sive design-build team that delivered the $185 million project, comprising a 173,000-sq.-ft. headquarters building, 4-story parking structure, 41,000-sq.-ft. firing range and an exterior training area. Incorporating many energy-efficient systems, the building is targeting LEED Gold certification. From the start, Hensel Phelps and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)
created a “one team” environment designed to tackle project complexities early, remove potential hurdles, and collaboratively eliminate any barriers to successful completion. A significant budget reduction upon project award put the project in jeop-
ardy, but the design-build team collaborated with LAWA and user groups to redesign the project to meet the new budget goal. Creative problem solving focused on providing best-value to the owner, often resulting in better use of space. Delivered on time and on budget, the new APF represents one of Califor-
nia’s most technologically advanced police facilities. Also selected as finalists in this category was McCarthy Building Companies for “Santa Monica High School Discovery Building.”
