Freeway Widening & Rehabilitation” To accommodate one of the busiest commuter freeways in the nation, the Route 710 Freeway Widening and Rehabilitation project brought massive improvements to this 1960s roadway infrastructure. Te project increased capacity on a busy 3.5-mile stretch of freeway in Los Angeles County. With scope that included four bridge widenings and eight new retaining walls, the project brought previously non-standard roads and bridges to modern specifications. Te primary bridge widening was the Hobart Yard Bridge. Located over
BNSF Railway’s busiest intermodal yard west of the Mississippi, this bridge spans 18 active tracks. Te construction team led by Flatiron devised inno- vative approaches for this technically complex work. Tey also demolished existing barriers and overhangs and constructed bridge widenings on both sides of the freeway at six other locations. Flatiron worked in close partnership with Caltrans and BNSF Railway to
identify opportunities for innovations that would save time and reduce safety risks. Ultimately, Flatiron persevered to deliver the project 18 months ahead of schedule and with zero claims. Also selected as finalist in this category were: Griffith Company for “Devil’s
Gate Dam Restoration Project” and Myers & Sons Construction for “Mokelumne River Bridge.”
