HEAVY CIVIL $100 MILLION AND OVER
Project” Te Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority awarded Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a Skanska / Traylor joint venture, with a design-build contract for the Regional Connector Transit Project. As managing partner, Skanska led the design and construction of the 1.9-mile light rail subway in downtown Los Angeles. Te project was filled with technical challenges inherent to underground
transit work taking place below congested downtown Los Angeles. Work scope included a mixture of two bored, mined, and cut-and-cover tunnels with three underground stations, including all systems and related infrastructure. Te Skanska-led team utilized an earth pressure balanced tunnel boring
machine for the 22-ft. diameter twin-bored tunnels. Te three underground stations span 400 feet long and range from 40 to 112 feet deep. One of the stations required extensive underpinning and the relocation of a large storm drain facility. Te project included over 3,700 feet of cut-and-cover tunnel construction in the highly congested financial district. Tis section and the three stations were constructed during 55-hour weekend closures. Also selected as finalists in this category were: Granite Construction Compa-
ny for “State Route 99 Cosumnes Bridge Replacement Project” and Mid-Coast Transit Constructors for “Mid-Coast Corridor Project.”
