Wild Thing by JEFF COOK I

train wild horses, that’s my job. Some are harder than others. Once in a while I’m blessed with a horse that just wants to please. Rocky is that horse. He is a four year old gelding from Green Mountain Wyoming and he is my choice to train and show in the Player’s Choice Extreme Mustang Makeover in Ft. Worth Texas in January.

In August, 120 selected horse trainers bid on the horse of their choos- ing based on a short video of some 300 wild mustangs. Rocky was my first choice and I paid $700, not to own him but just for the privilege of training him and showing him. All of the trainers picked up their horses in September and the clock started ticking. With roughly 120 days to work with our horses the time just flies by. Rocky is my 7th EMM horse and maybe my favorite so far. He has shown me a willingness to try ev- erything I ask of him. A short 10 days out of holding, I was already riding him. Within the first month, he lays down on command and much more.

The show is held during the Ft. Worth stock show and rodeo and the best mustang trainers in the world will compete for over $250,000 in prize money. At the end of the show, the horses are auctioned off and the trainers get half of what they sell for. In the short time we have these horses, the bond between horse and trainer can become so strong that selling them becomes absolutely heartbreaking. We work so hard to ensure that these loyal friends go to a loving, caring home. Arizona is represented by 4 trainers from around the state who really try to help each other. The comradery is amazing because it’s really all about the horses. Our progress can be followed on Facebook on Extreme Mustang Makeover Ft. Worth or on dreamhorseaz.com
