often have a close relationship with a particular mare or mares, mares also bond with one another. Sometimes this is due to family ties but other times it is by preferential choice. These bonds can last a lifetime.

When a herd cull takes place family bands and loving bonds between horses are destroyed. This not only affects the horses that are removed but creates chaos in those horses that are left. When the bands are left torn and broken it sets many problems in motion such as compensatory reproduction. Human interference through unnatural culls obstruct na- ture’s ability to self-limit the herd.


We are expecting the Heber Wild Horse Territory management plan to include a major herd cull. At the time of this writing the U.S. Forest Service has not released their man- agement plan.
