Jasmine McComb added. “Allowing her to have this exposure to be on a cheer team gives her a chance to have fun and try things many people can’t.” To be honest, it can be uncomfortable for many people who are not familiar with Down syndrome, or what Sophia is like. But it only takes some time, and Sophia wins them over. Teammates soon realize that she’s just like them in many ways. She wants to be accepted, have friends and be part of a group. The

have quickly learned how to help her. Bottom line is that she wants to do the same things all the other students are doing, so they lead by example and are great role models,” her parents said. Jennifer Redcay took over the job as JC cheer coach midway through Sophia’s sophomore year. “Both of us have grown over the years to understand and respect each other. The team has always helped Sophia in all aspects of cheer, and she really enjoys these Sophia’s favorite cheers are “Pump it Up” and “Red and Black.” She says it’s also fun to hold the letter cards (J-E-F-F-C-I-T-Y and “I also really like to do my stunt when my friends lift me up high!” Sophia said.
And that’s exactly what cheerleading has done in Sophia’s life. It’s lifted her up.
And in her own special way, Sophia has lifted her teammates up and made everyone in this program a little better.
