Steven Propester, CPA
During his final year of grad school at Oklahoma State University, Steven Propester, CPA, a senior manager with Grant Tornton in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, took an international accounting class and was immediately hooked.
“I found it fascinating comparing the
different reporting frameworks between countries and regions and analyzing the social and economic drivers behind each,” Propester said. “My final research project was a comparison of U.S. SEC reporting frameworks to Australian GAAP.” In 2012, he was able to get first- hand experience, as he traveled to Grant Tornton International’s office in Perth, Australia, and volunteered for a subsequent assignment in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “It was definitely one of the most challenging experiences of my career trying to navigate Malaysia without a working cell phone, internet, [with] the language barrier and trying to be respectful of cultural differences,” Propester said. An OSCPA member for seven
years, Propester has served on the Young Accounting Professionals (YAP) Committee and has volunteered for OSCPA Day of Service as well as contributed an article for CPAFOCUS. Additionally, he is on the board for the Ronald McDonald House of Oklahoma City, where he has volunteered for the Walk for Kids and Red Shoe Gala.
Propester is also an alumni representative for Beta Alpha Psi at Oklahoma State University, where he helps with fundraisers, student networking events, resume and interview workshops and professional speaking events. He is also a member of the AICPA, Financial Executives International and Young Professionals in Energy. “Early on in my career I became passionate about serving on audits of oil and gas clients,” Propester said. “It has been rewarding to partner with them as they have grown and evolved over the last decade. Tese past few years have had their challenges, and we have had to adapt to the current downturn of energy markets… however, this has made us all better auditors and made us continue to improve the quality of our work.” Tony Holden, CPA, an audit partner
with Grant Tornton in Oklahoma City, said Propester exclusively focuses on the firm’s largest and most complex oil and gas clients. “Over the course of his career, Steven’s passion, commitment to excellence and unwavering ethics have benefited our firm beyond measure,” Holden said. Propester, who is also an avid marathon
runner, said, “I owe my career to the investments my managers and partners made in me and I’m excited to pay it forward to the next generation of talent.”
