Sara Edwards, CPA, the chief financial officer and treasurer of Locke Supple Company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, lives the phrase, “never a dull moment.” “[I was] told when I started that working

here would never be boring, as there was always something going on,” she said, “which I can honestly say I have found to be true.” “My job routinely involves handling accounting issues that need to be investigated or resolved, but it also offers opportunities to work directly with the HR department, interact with our sales team, and spend some time in the warehouse with our inventory department. Te continual interaction with others that play different roles within the company has helped me not only grow in my role, but also in my understanding of the business as a whole,” Edwards explained. While Edwards, who earned her

bachelor’s from the University of Kansas and her master’s from the University of Oklahoma, says her position is a blessing, she also confesses the new gig took a leap of faith—and that it took a while for her to embrace the idea of change. “I had been Locke’s auditor for over

five years when they approached me to come on board as their Controller. I met with Jack Anderson, the executive vice president of Finance, who offered me the position. At that point, however, I wasn’t sure I was ready to leave public accounting and so ultimately turned the position down,” Edwards said. “Over the course of the next six months, I was able to give

more thought to making a change and ultimately contacted Jack again to see if the opportunity was still available. Six weeks later I joined Locke Supply.” Edwards, an OSCPA member for six

years, was named CFO in July 2016, a promotion that comes as no surprise to her mentor. “I have known and worked closely with

Sara for approximately the past eight years,” Anderson said. “In those eight years she has shown that she has a good work ethic and very broad knowledge of accounting. Sara’s attitude and personality are second to none. I can truthfully say that Sara is the best candidate for my replacement and that Locke will not miss a beat.” Edwards has also reached personal zen though her family. “My most significant personal

achievement thus far would be the raising of our five-year-old son,” she said. “He has been a complete joy to get to watch as he continually discovers the world around him. He is optimistic about nearly every situation, willing to try new things and unafraid to express his emotions at any time to anyone. As a parent, I want to cultivate his curiosity and hope that is a trait that carries over as he continues to develop and mature.” “As is the case most of the time, those

we teach end up teaching us,” Edwards added. “My son is no exception. He is an inspiration to me in his approach to the world, which further encourages me to be better for that.”
