Increasing AGC Diversity in 2016 It is my
privilege to serve as your 2016 President and represent AGC of California. First, I want to recognize Jon Ball of Hensel Phelps for all his hard
work and a job well done this past year. I also welcome a new slate of officers: Mike Mencarini, Unger Construction Company, as Senior Vice President; Walt Johnson, K.G. Walters Construction Co. Inc., as Vice President; and Jerome DiPadova, Skanska USA Civil West, as Treasurer. We will all work hard to make our association one of Choice and Voice. As a member-driven association,
AGC of California is only as strong as the members we represent and the efforts of each one. In our strategic planning this year, there was much discussion about developing into a more customer-centric association to build our membership numbers further. With larger numbers and more member involvement, we accomplish more for our industry. Staff can help open the doors, but it is up to us to help close the sale to make AGC a stronger voice. More involvement from our members is the key to making our association grow. An active and growing membership will continue to afford us the opportunity to be heard on political issues at local, state, and national levels. Te future of this association will
be defined by our ability to become more diverse in our boards and in our leadership. In his term as President, Jon Ball helped start us down this path. But we can do more. Diversity will come from many aspects of our industry: specialty contractors, CLC members, more diverse ethnicities, and women. We must encourage growth in all these areas. To encourage diversity, we’ve changed

our bylaws to grant more leadership roles to subcontractors and specialty contractors. Tis will give us the ability to attract more diverse members. Ten we need to get new members involved quickly so they have a voice. Early and meaningful involvement
will show our new members the value of the association and all the work it does to advocate for and shape industry issues. And it is our collective voice as contractors that will make a difference in our industry. I fondly remember my early days at Griffith Company some 25 years ago when the company encouraged me to attend AGC events. Tat’s where I met many of the regional and state leaders in the industry and gained a great bit of knowledge and history about the state’s construction industry. Today, I still have and value many of those relation- ships that I developed early on. I can assure you that I would not be President of Griffith Company today without the education and the relationships that this association has afforded me. Please consider bringing your young,
up-and-coming employees to AGC events and give them the same oppor- tunity that we were given. Tey will learn from our industry leaders, like we did, and better understand the risks and issues in our industry, the importance of education, and the value of our PAC and political involvement. So I ask you to help me with my goals
for this coming year. Help me build a growing, diverse membership that brings new perspectives and challenges our traditional ways of thinking. And let’s increase involvement across the districts and at the state level so we become an even more dynamic, energized group and truly represent the best choice and the leading voice in the construction industry both now and in the future.
