wanted to perform a community service project that could have a wide-reaching and long-term effect. Understanding the strong potential for solar power construction, Stronghold chose to donate solar power systems to two churches in the Riverside community. With expertise in high-voltage

electrical construction, Stronghold sees the strong potential for solar power as a means of lowering emissions and providing a better environment for future generations. Working in conjunction with Lamb Energy, Stronghold designed and donated all labor and materials to install 64.8 kW Solar Power Systems on Harvest Church and Te Grove Community Church. Both churches have deep roots in the community and provide vital services to local citizens. Te 100-percent self-performed

and donated project will lower the two church’s energy costs to allow those funds to instead be used to provide community service to local citizens. Te two solar systems are estimated

to annually produce over 100,000 kWh, saving the churches approxi- mately $25,000 per year. In addition, the energy produced by these systems will not only save the churches money, but will also provide environmental benefits by saving the equivalent gas emissions of 175,688 miles driven in an average passenger car. photovoltaic systems include online monitoring features that offer up-to- date information on their energy generation and environmental benefits. Stronghold Engineering’s donation

and installation of these photovoltaic systems served to fulfill the contractor’s goal to give back to the communities in which it works. Also selected as finalist in this category

was Flatiron West Inc. / Parsons, A Joint Venture for “BART Oakland Interna- tional Airport Connector” – Oakland.

Excellence in Project Manage- ment for Projects Over $10 Million

Constructor Winner: Unger

Construction Company for “Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital” – Santa Rosa

Perhaps nothing is more difficult

for the builder than constructing a hospital in California’s highly regulated climate. Sutter Health hired Unger

Construction in 2008 to work with HGA Architects to design and build its uniquely challenging Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital facility. Te project had strict budget and schedule parameters with no flexibility. Te budget was created without drawings, and the 2014 hospital opening date was set prior to beginning construction. Unger used a variety of project

management tools to accelerate the design process while keeping the costs within Sutter’s limits. Tey employed

a unique collaborative management process of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and utilized Target Value Design. All 13 major contractors and designers signed a multi-party contract with a Guaranteed Maximum Price and committed to placing 100 percent of their profit at risk in a shared pool if final costs exceeded the maximum. Despite excellent planning,

challenges inevitably arose during construction. One of those included a water treatment plant that had to be incorporated into the project after the local water district reneged on its agreement to supply water to the site. Te team devised a way to integrate the new plant without affecting the end date, as well as to absorb the $7 million extra cost into the GMP through various savings measures. In addition, Unger integrated

fuel cell generation technology which provided significant energy cost savings and allowed the project to achieve LEED Gold status. Unger completed the Sutter Santa

Rosa Regional Hospital on time and $3 million under budget, despite adding $17 million of “value-added” scope along the way. Also selected as finalists in this category

were: Flatiron West, Inc. for “Route 15/76 Separation” – Fallbrook; Hensel Phelps for “California Health Care Facility Package #3: DeWitt Nelson Correctional Annex (DCNA)” – Stockton; and Te Clark
