Meeting the Challenge of the Difficult Job – Specialty Contractor Classification

Constructor Winner: Dynalectric, An

EMCOR Company for “LAX Bradley West Core Project” – Los Angeles Te LAX Bradley West Core

expansion was crucial in maintaining LAX’s lead as one of the world’s busiest airports. Dynalectric was subcontracted by the Walsh Austin JV for the electrical and low voltage scope of an international terminal expansion project. Challenges began in precon-

struction when the team found complications with the structural steel in electrical distribution locations. Dynalectric’s virtual design team worked to modify the approved BIM drawings, effectively avoiding over 500 potential clashes in the field.

www.AGC-CA.org Another challenge related to the

logistics of transporting more than 60 craft employees across live runways to the construction site. Tis presented a daily coordination challenge, particularly given the security issues of working at a busy airport. Yet another major challenge

resulted from the more than 1,100 owner-issued change directives to the electrical and IT systems. Tose changes nearly tripled Dynalectric’s scope of work from its base contract, yet the project end date could not move. Installing the iconic features such as the 80-by-26-foot LED display, baggage handling system tie-ins, and utility infrastructure became even more challenging because some of these changes were issued after finishes had been installed. Te largest and most intricate

of the scope changes involved the Integrated Environmental Media System, which included some 20 million LEDs over 12,000 square feet of displays. To accomplish that, Dynalectric installed all new electrical rooms, conduit systems, fiber optic cables and a state-of-the-art control room – features introduced more than a year after the project’s start date. Despite the many challenges and

changes, Dynalectric successfully completed the project as planned with the highest level of quality and craftsmanship. Also selected as finalists in this

category were: Rosendin Electric, Inc. for “Western Antelope Blue Sky Ranch ‘A’” – Lancaster; and Royal Electric Company for “Altamont Commuter Express (ACE)” – Stockton. 
