SAFETY AWARDS
Myers & Sons Superintendent Recognized Charlie Nicholson, superintendent for Myers & Sons Construction Company, was recog-
nized for his safety efforts with the “Individual Safety Effort of a Superintendent” safety award from AGC of California. In 2012 Myers & Sons convinced Nicholson to come out of early retirement to help build
a new water works division at Myers. He brought 35 years of treatment plant construction experience to a new generation. Over the past three years he has led teams on several projects, most recently wrapping up construction on Myers’ expansion on the $3.5 million Linda County Water District WWTP-Phase II. The very real danger of working
in a facility that houses hazardous chemicals, pressurized lines, pipes and cylinder, potentially noxious odors and fumes while helping ensure the safety of Myers’ crews is extremely

challenging. According to Nicholson, “Keeping these guys safe is what gets me moving every morning.” In addition to creating a facilities orientation site-walk that educates
craft workers on specific challenges inherent to the facility, Nicholson also integrated a “battle buddy” system that pairs new site workers with site-experienced team members recognized for their safety performance in the same scope of work. Making his area team leaders into “safety force multipliers,” Nicholson has established
“First 15” program in which key team leaders and superintendent staff engage in struc- tured communication covering key daily issues. This ensures that Myers’ corporate safety program “Safe and Sound” is taught, executed, monitored and reviewed at every level in the field environment.

Myers & Sons Devises Unique Solution Myers & Sons was challenged to
keep its workers and the surrounding public safe on a highly exposed, heavily congested project it was building in the middle of the busy Los Angeles Interna- tional Airport. The second-level roadway project
entailed a bridge jacking and repair, bearing pad replacement, barrier replacement, concrete deck overlay and roadway widening. The bridge jacking took place above three lanes of active vehicular traffic on the lower LAX access level. Other portions of the work were next to areas that see massive numbers of vehicle and pedestrian traffic daily. Myers engineered a unique solution
for the bridgework called “inline hinge support.” The method involved the use of structural steel members mounted directly to the underside of the bridge deck at the “landing” side of each hinge joint. These structural steel members were cantilevered across the joint under repair, and pneumatic lifts were positioned at the “free end” of each. Pneumatic force was then used to raise the bridge deck to facilitate structural concrete repairs and replacement of bearing pads. The unique safety solution ultimately
reduced the overall project time and resulting impacts to passengers by six full calendar months. It eliminated movement of over 68,000 passengers per day into street lanes and simplified the method and approach for construction to ensure added safety. AGC of California awarded Myers
& Sons a Unique Safety Award for the solution devised for this project.
