AGRIBUSINESS OF THE YEAR SCOTT SMITH & FAMILY, ASHLAND FARM
Culpeper Mid-Day Lions Club has been serving the community for 62 years. In 2022, they donated almost $80,000 to the community via scholarships and donations to many non-profits. They have also provided eyeglasses for those in need, served free meals at Manna Ministry once a month, packed for Power Pack, donated an eyeglass sculpture along with two benches to Rockwater Park with a third bench to the Cedar Mountain Battlefield. They have recycled 1,500 lbs of plastic, sponsored Leo Clubs at the high schools, conducted vision and hearing screenings for over 2,500 students in both public and private schools. They are collaborating with carpentry students at Culpeper Technical Education Center to provide a gazebo/pavilion for the senior center. Members have donated over 3,000 volunteer hours to various entities such as Culpeper County Library and Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby.
Ashland Farm stretches along over 1,400 acres in Stevensburg. Originally a dairy farm, the operation switched to growing corn, soy beans, alfalfa, wheat and other crops in 2013. Scott Smith is the fourth generation in his family to work on the farm, with his boys being the fifth. Portions of their crops are sold regionally for animal feed or to be processed into other goods. Other portions of their crops such as their soybeans are shuttled to Richmond to container ships to be shipped around the world. The farm also has beef cattle and sells calves.
