Culpeper’s students remain active Current youth trends in recreation and
activities are diff erent from past trends in many ways — technology, mental health, school closures during the pandemic along with social media have directly infl uenced music, lifestyle, art and participation in traditionally popular sports. Students are in fact active, despite
the perception of adults, especially those involved in varsity sports or travel teams. Sports are more oſt en year-long activities for many young people. Over the last decade another more disturbing trend has emerged — many young people reportedly lack motivation to pursue activities seemingly as important as getting a driver’s license. In Culpeper’s two high schools,
students enjoy a wide variety of sports and extracurricular activities. T e benefi ts of activities associated
with clubs and activities are essential. Extracurriculars provide freedom to
grow, have fun, socialize and challenge oneself mentally, which is an essential foundation of growing into a productive and happy adult. Locally, Culpeper’s high school students pursue a wide variety of extracurricular activities. T e variety and focus of popular
extracurricular clubs are a direct refl ection of the wide lists of interests among today’s youth. Sports are popular, but so are social, cultural, farming, outdoors and artistic clubs. Social justice, technology and gaming clubs are also on the rise. According to Culpeper County High
School Assistant Activities Director Cathy Uribe, the school currently has 645 students participating in 28 extracurricular clubs, which is the most she’s had in her tenure. T e most popular club is the Walking Club with 123 members. “We take the kids down to the track
during club time and they walk and socialize,” she said. “I think they enjoy just
EVHS off ered 39 club options this year and almost all of them are fi lled to maximum limits with waiting lists.
