Recreation programs keep youth busy While Kathy Butler was running a
5K, she saw a group of girls. It leſt her wondering why there were so many children. She Googled what she saw on the girls’ shirts: Girls on the Run. A program to empower young girls
across the nation, it didn’t take any convincing for Butler to be interested. “I didn't have the time for getting
involved on a bigger level, so an aſt er- school program with my son was what I had the time for,” she said. Girls on the Run Piedmont was
founded in 2013. T eir membership has only increased
since last year – even for their spring season, which is usually their smallest. T ey had their largest spring season ever in 2022 with 89 girls and came in at 389 girls in the fall. “Culpeper has a wonderful community.
It's really helped our expansion. As soon as we expanded into Culpeper, we exploded,” Butler said. Despite the limiting associations with a

younger, and I hear all my coaches say that constantly.” For Culpeper’s at-risk youth, however,

Overcome obstacles. Learn to be a better you. Victorious over situations. Eager to be successful. T ese are the values that make up the center. T e center assists at-risk youth with
tutoring, activities, mentoring and opportunities to help kids realize their full potential at home, in school and within their community. Founder Damion Motley kicked the
nonprofi t off with a six-week summer program in 2016. Motley established the center aſt er
workout program, “It is much more than a running program. We're building the next generation of women leaders,” Butler said. “I just wish this was around when I was
seeing a need for resources that empower the Culpeper youth that don't have reliable access to friends, food, fun and education. “Our daughter was an at-risk teen and
the options she was given in Culpeper were very limited,” Motley said. “At that time, I
