U.S. sales of bottled water have climbed steadily over the past 40 years and reached a milestone in 2016: per capita consumption of bottled  of carbonated soft drinks, which posted per capita consumption of 38.5 gallons. At the turn of the 21st century, per capita consumption of carbonated soft drinks exceeded 50 gallons. With the exception of two years during the Great Recession (2008 and 2009), volume sales of bottled water have risen every year since 1977. Since 2006, volume sales have grown by just over 50 percent, and the year-over-year in- crease in 2016 of 8.6 percent, to 12.8 billion gallons, was the largest in the past 10 years. Dollar value of the sales is also up just over 50 percent, from $10.97 billion in 2006 to $15.96 billion in 2016. Year over year, sales growth totaled 10 percent, again the largest increase in the past 10 years. Don Welsh, DI’s CEO, told USAE the name change was the result of much research and discussions over several months between members and customers. Key, Welsh said, was the organiza- tion is a trade group, not a marketing one and the new brand identity is more in keeping with its core mission. The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) has released its 2017 CEIR Index Report. The CEIR Index analyzes the 2016 ex- hibition industry and provides an economic and exhibition industry outlook for the next three years. Despite a decidedly mixed perfor- mance early in the year and worldwide political turmoil in the second half, U.S. economic growth proved resilient again in 2016, with GDP rising a moderate but unimpressive 1.6 percent. The economy once more was led by robust personal consumption expenditures as a result of expanding labor markets and recovering personal income.
