Kevin Olsen: There are more conversations about safety and secu- rity today right now in our industry than there has ever been. There is a growing awareness of the threat environment and a very uncom- fortable reality of how soft our industry is. I think the combination of  it has gathered industry-wide support in such a relatively short period of time. Kevin Olsen: For sure they do. On the other side of the coin, we also heard the complete opposite perspective, i.e., that if a building is Safe-  will cost client organizations more and could be a detractor in the mar- ketplace if a group does not want to invest in the safety and security of their attendees. The building could literally lose a client or an RFP. Back in late August, I had a pretty tough conversation with a very

senior venue executive in the industry who basically said, “I’m not interested. It’s going to cost me business.” That conversation literally turned our methodology on its head.

Brad Mayne: We’re garnering sup- port from the whole industry, and the venue is the central manager of putting this whole process together. We continue to grow awareness of EMSSI throughout our membership to diminish these types of concerns. Fundamental to this initiative has been engaging our members, build- ing in their input (through the ISC) to the guidelines, and to reinforce that EMSSI is “for us by us” and we’re not ceding anything ... we’re establishing a baseline of guidelines that once designated will not be monitored or controlled by DHS.

“Our members need to know and understand that it’s a new day. The threats are growing in number and it’s constantly changing so now we have to prepare. Again, it’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when.

we never thought this would be possible, is EMSSI is putting IAVM members in the ultimate position of control to give their potential cus- tomers a choice.
