I was fascinated to learn that you and your wife share a passion for your hobby of restoring antique British cars. How was that interest sparked and how long have you been doing this? Any memorable road trips in those project cars? Growing up in Texas you would think I would be a muscle car or truck guy. Those cars go straight really well but I like curves (or direction changes much like my career) and these cars, while they don’t go as fast as muscle cars, they kick ass in the curves. And let’s be honest … girls love small convertibles. I started this obsession at 13-years-old when I bought a 1967 MGB for $50 and towed it home. I was forced to kick the habit during college, but then in 1997 my wife said I needed a hobby and what about those little cars you use to drive (see, girls like    

Many in our industry, especially those of us who are Baby Boomers and Generation X’ers, find work/life balance to be a challenge. What advice might you offer younger professionals to maintain this balance? “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is a phrase we have all heard and/or used. I think the younger generation might be better at advising us on this subject. I have thought a lot about this subject and I think it has a lot to do with personal choices and priorities. If it is a priority for someone, they will make it happen.

The pace of technology and the immediate access to commu- nication media are changing the way people experience live events. What are your thoughts where this is going and how it impacts our profession? The evolution of live events is always changing and it is up to us as venue managers to keep up with all the trends that make our patrons comfortable and happy so they will keep coming back. We are social creatures and at some point we want to be with that crowd cheering on our team, seeing that musical, or just walking around looking at old cars. We share interest with other human beings. How we share may change but we will always want to share.

I find myself intrigued with the convergence of pop culture, history, and musical theater that Hamilton has introduced to the world. Do you think this phenomenon will bring new audi- ences to the performing arts?

In looking back over your professional successes, is there any one thing that stands out for you as special – a “Wow, I did that!” kind of moment or achievement? On the flip side, any lessons learned from things that didn’t go quite right? I hope I always learn from my mistakes. If you’re not learning you’re dying.

What would you say to other fellow venue management col- leagues who are thinking about becoming a CFE? Whether they are thinking about it or not I tell everyone that they should get their CFE, and not to give up.

If you weren’t working in this industry, what might you have found yourself doing? Being an explorer or a photographer.
