The new face of terrorism and the questions being asked about EMSSI

Baugus recently invited six key in- dividuals involved in the formation, planning, execution, and eventual roll-out of the Exhibitions Meetings Safety & Security Initiative (EMS- SI) to participate in a roundtable conversation to discuss all facets of the ongoing project. In Part 2 of this two-part series, participants Brad Mayne, CFE,
president and CEO, International Association of Venue Managers - EMSSI and its success going forward.
R.V.: What concerns you the most when you think about potential
Brad Mayne: As a venue manager, what kept me up at night was the safety and security of those that I had stewardship for, those who entered my facility. If our membership and our venues do not have a mindset that they are responsible for this, then I’m surprised that they’re part of our membership. Even more important is that we’re creating an EMSSI toolkit of resources that will allow members to strengthen and harden the target that we all have become.

When (U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Safety Act Of-
- ica, he talked about the threat, the existence of the threat, and how it has changed from these organized international groups planning these hits, to how now they are educating and converting individuals in North America to become radicals in the comfort of their own homes. Within a 30-mile radius is where they’re usually going to hit. The big- gest thing that resonated for us out of these circumstances was that the who those individuals are or what they’re planning. It used to be that they would get wind through the intelligence com-
mittee of certain things that were happening. That still happens today, and it’s amazing how correct that has always been, but now you’ve got somebody who’s been radicalized in their home and there is no information about those individuals whatsoever. That’s what really concerns me and our industry, how that dynamic has changed and and they’re going after locations that people gather at. That’s exactly who our membership is. They gather at our venues. It’s really important for us to take that responsibility, do everything
that we can to thwart these threats when possible, and if indeed it does Plus, we need to communicate with one another to make sure that security in our facilities as an industry. Finally, we need to do all this with the help and the assistance of everybody who’s involved in the exhibitions and meetings space. Our members need to know and understand that it’s a new day.
