How A Chicago Winter Meeting In 1986 Became VMS. By Dexter King, CFE

In the early winter of December 1986 in Chicago, IAAM President (as the association and chairman were known then) Roy Saunders, CFE, chaired the mid-winter meeting of the IAAM Board of Direc- tors (BOD). Of the many action items on the agenda was a Profession- al Development Committee (PDC) report for his education vision for the industry. As Roy’s theme for the year was “synergy,” the committee had so-

The result was a collection of education tracks of core competencies, complete with a syllabus template for each. With the inspiration and leadership of IAAM Foundation Chair Al Antee, CFE, the BOD approved an action plan advanced by the Foundation to establish a delivery program using the PDC curriculum template.  - rived in Wheeling, West (by God) Virginia to spend a few days ex- ploring a location for rolling out the auspicious education program approved by the board. Those making the trip were Antee, Walter Schatz, Foundation Vice Chair, IAAM Executive Director Rich Ben- son (representing P.M. Hager & Associates), and myself, as chair of the Professional Development Committee.   - rection of Dr. Tom Hines, Emeritus – North Carolina State University  reality of a probable rollout came into view. As it turned out, Oglebay Park, known for its incredible golf cours-

es, was already the successful host during its shoulder seasons for nu- merous other education programs, among them notably a golf school and a revenue school being the oldest. Also included were a zoology school and an arboretum school.

With that said, Oglebay had a plethora of systems, templates, or-
