OM THE CROWD

Cultivating A Positive Culture Through Venue Management School, IAVM has done a fantastic job of cultivating a positive culture that is focused on building relation- ships and servant leadership. This experi- ence has allowed me to not only be a more well-rounded venue man- agement professional, but expanded my network of contacts across North America. I look forward to returning for the 30th anniversary of the school.

We Share And We Care I remember, as an IAVM (back then it was still IAAM) student vol- unteer, wanting to go to VMS once I was settled into a facility after graduation. I had always heard fellow coworkers talk about their ex- perience and how they would never forget the friendships made while at Oglebay. I’m now a part of that group and will never forget that “Wheeling Feeling.” Once I was given the green light to go by my  a bit of nerves. The classes were a takeaway in themselves. I will never forget Tam-

my Koolbeck’s class and how I should NEVER be the spokesperson for a venue (I had a tough crowd)! I constantly think about how PR works (or doesn’t work) every day in our world, and even this morning, I thought that if I reached out to Tammy for advice, no matter the topic, she wouldn’t hesitate to listen and talk out a solution. At the end of day, I thought that by going to VMS I would gain the  that I am not the only one who faces industry challenges, and I’m not the only one who works late on a Friday. I’m on track to succeed in our industry with so many others because of programs like VMS, but if ever an ounce of doubt creeps into my mind, I have peers that I met at VMS to lean on for advice and a good laugh to get me through. I can’t wait to go back this year for Year 2, to not only see everyone,

but to grow as a professional. It won’t hurt that the cicadas won’t be there.

– Ashley York THE TALE OF THE VMS BELL

We had classes pretty much all day Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, we stopped at noon for the afternoon golf outing. Thursday was all day and then Friday one-half day, then lunch,           graduation ceremony and parties. A tradition began early on, Iikely borrowed from larger Oglebay school traditions, that during the week a student would “steal” the Bell. Maybe it was laying on a table. I one year had hired this dude, Keith, and according to him, he had the Bell stuck in his belt, and some student basically robbed him of it. Now, the story goes that each year after the Bell was stolen,

there became somewhat of a scandal because we could not ring to get all the smokers and belligerent and gabby students back         class responsible for stealing it used the next 12 months to send it around the country to get photos of it with various miscreants  ceremony.
