Tis trial was also evaluated ‘on-site’ at four golf
courses, Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, IL, Shadow Glen Golf Club in Olathe, KS, Karsten Creek Country Club in Stillwater, OK, and Tokatee Golf Club in McKenzie Bridge, OR. Year two of the trial’s top performers at the four locations include PST-0HR, Spectrum, and PSU-CBG1b. Diseases were evaluated at a few locations in year
two of the trial. Dollar spot ratings from two locations showed Spectrum, PVF-PV-1, DLFPS-AP-1084, Oakley, and Piper with the least damage. Pythium root rot was noted at Raleigh, NC, in 2022. PVF-PV-1, Oakley, and Piper were some of the highest rated entries.
Fairway/Tee Trial Te 2020 trial provides data on new experimental
entries that may become commercialized in the future. Tis latest trial consists of eighteen creeping entries and one colonial bentgrass entry, planted at eight standard trial locations and seven ancillary trial locations. Turfgrass quality collected and analyzed from
2022 was divided into two LPI groups, however with larger statistical separation among entries than with 2021 data. In 2021, Penncross, the well-established standard finished as a top turfgrass quality at two locations, possibly due to superior seedling establishment. In 2022, Penncross fell in performance as several new entries delivered promising results. Piper, Oakley, Spectrum, 007XL, and PVF-PV-1, all creeping bentgrasses, finished in the top statistical group in both LPI analyses. Musket, a colonial bentgrass,
performed well in one LPI group, finishing as the top turf quality performer at the Storrs, CT, Blacksburg, VA, and Quebec City, Quebec, sites. An ancillary trial at Fort Collins, CO, evaluating
performance under saline irrigation yielded small statistical differences in 2022. Tis site may require multiple years of high salt irrigation to separate entries. Contrary to the saline irrigation site, traffic
tolerance ancillary evaluations at Amherst, MA, showed great statistical significance in year two. Creeping bentgrasses PVF-PV-1 and Spectrum, along with the colonial bent Musket were top turf quality performers at Amherst. When traffic tolerance alone was considered, PST-R0DS, Piper, Spectrum, and DLF-AP-3084 showed the best performance. Disease resistance is an important feature of
any fairway or tee bentgrass and is a major need for golf course superintendents. Dollar spot, the most prevalent and concerning disease on golf course fairways, was noted at five locations in 2022 over the trial period. Typically, colonial bentgrasses display excellent dollar spot tolerance, which Musket did at four of those locations. Musket finished in the top statistical group for overall dollar spot tolerance (7.8, scale is 1-9, 9=no disease, LSD=0.8), but it is impressive that the creeping bents 007XL (8.0), DLF- AP-3084 (8.0), Spectrum (7.9), Piper (7.9), PVF-PV-1 (7.9), and PVF-PV-2 (7.9) finished with a higher overall dollar spot rating than Musket.
