Collins, CO, location was managed with saline irrigation, but few statistical differences were noted in 2021. Data from 2022 showed more significance as about one-third of the entries performed statistically worse than the best performer DLFPS-FL-3104. Trials were planted under tree shade in Newark, DE, and Ames, IA, but statistical significance among entries was again negligible. Data collected in future years will hopefully separate these entries. Fairway mowing tolerance of entries in this trial
was again evaluated at St. Paul, MN. Hard fescues Resolute, PVF-PDB-2020, and Beacon II, as well as Chewings fescues Radar II, BAR FRC 130, and Brittany 2 were the best performers. Under simulated traffic, hard fescues Gladiator, PVF-PDB-2020, Sword II, and Tenacious were the best entries at Amherst, MA. At East Lansing, MI, Chewings fescues PVF-MVP-2020 and NAI-Chu1, among others, finished in the top statistical group. Four important diseases were evaluated in 2022.
As well as the standard NTEP trials, NTEP trials bentgrasses onsite at golf courses.
better drought tolerance than Chewings or creeping types. Sheep fescue (Festuca ovina L. ssp. hirtula) is best suited for low maintenance sites because of its unique, swirly, growth habit from within the crown of the plant. A new fineleaf fescue trial was established in 2020
consisting of forty-three (43) total entries, broken down into hard fescue (11), strong creeping red fescue (14), slender creeping red fescue (2), Chewings fescue (13), and sheep fescue (3). Te trial was planted at fourteen standard trial locations and ten ancillary trial locations. Data from 2022 is analyzed and sorted based on
groups of species that performed well at selected locations. Multiple-year analysis will be needed to evaluate long-term performance. Tree LPI groups were identified in year two data, which better reflects performance considering diseases and other stresses. In 2021, LPI group 1 top performers were
primarily hard fescues. However, these LPI groups change from year to year and Chewings fescues Radar II, NAI- Chu1, Brittany 2, and DLFPS-FRC-3105 are LPI group 1 top performers in 2022. LPI groups 2 and 3, consisting of locations as diverse as Connecticut, Kansas, Utah, and Quebec, finished almost exclusively with hard fescues such as Tenacious, Sword II, Beacon II, and PVF-PDB-2020 in their top statistical groups. Several ancillary trial locations were initiated with
data collected from some of these sites in 2022. Te Fort 54
Leaf spot damage (various species) was significant at North Brunswick, NJ, with hard fescues PVF-PDB-2020 and Tenacious, among others showing little to no disease. Red thread developed at Blacksburg, VA, with hard fescues BAR FT 135, Beacon II, Gladiator (among others), and Chewings fescue DLFPS-FRC-3105 showing the least disease. Summer patch data collected at North Brunswick, NJ, showed several Chewings fescue entries, including Brittany 2, Jamestown VII, Compass II, and Radar II with the least disease. And finally, brown patch was noted at the Raleigh, NC, location. Te least disease was noted on strong creeping red fescue entries Navigator II, PPG- FRR-14, PVF-HSY+, and STB1.
Bentgrass New trials of bentgrass were established in the fall
of 2020 with the first data released in the spring of 2022. Two species are included in these trials: creeping (Agrostis stolonifera) and colonial bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis). Te second- year summary (2022 data) is now available on our website and is the basis for the bentgrass discussion that follows.
Putting Green Trial
Tis trial, containing twenty creeping bentgrasses, was established at nine standard trial locations and ten ancillary trial locations. Turfgrass quality ratings collected in years one and two of the trial revealed several new cultivars that can exceed the quality delivered by previous top performers such as Declaration and Penn A-1. Encompassing data from eight locations, PST-0HR, PST- PV-1, and Oakley were the only entries finishing in the top statistical group in all three LPI analyses. Various ancillary trials were conducted at a limited
number of sites. Oakley, DLFPS-AP-3084, PST-0HR, PVF-PV-2, Spectrum, Pipe, and PSU-CBG2 filled out the top statistical group in traffic evaluations conducted at Amherst, MA, in 2022.
