Update On Cultivars

Te following is an overview of the latest information on commercially available and experimental cultivars.

COOL-SEASON Kentucky Bluegrass

Our latest trial of Kentucky bluegrass was established in 2017 with this article reporting on the fifth and final year of data (2022). Typically, first-year data strongly reflects the rate of establishment, as well as the performance without significant thatch development. Second-year data is the first indication of longer-term performance. Year three data and beyond, particularly from Kentucky bluegrass, often contains responses to stresses such as disease, shade, or drought. In addition, significant thatch may have developed in Kentucky bluegrass by year three or four, which can affect drought tolerance, encourage disease development, and contribute to other problems. In this summary, we look at locations in the different regions and identify top performers. Similar to 2021, data from 2022 yielded small

or no statistical significance among entries at several sites including Storrs, CT, St. Paul, MN, Knoxville, TN, Stillwater, OK, and Logan, UT. Sites that did produce good statistical differences and separation among entries can be divided into Midwest/North Central U.S. or Mid- Atlantic/Transition Zone regions. Midwest/North Central locations West Lafayette,

IN, Ames, IA, and Mead, NE, all had Cloud as a top ten entry. At East Lansing, MI, Mead, NE, and West Lafayette, IN, Barserati finished within the top five of entries. Bombay was the top entry at Mead while also finishing in the top five at East Lansing. Other entries finishing in the top statistical group at three or four of these sites include Syrah and NuRush. Locations in the Mid-Atlantic and Transition

Zone with excellent statistical separation include College Park, MD, Blacksburg, VA, North Brunswick, NJ, Adelphia, NJ, and Raleigh, NC. Te only entries finishing in the top statistical group at all five locations were Barserati and J-1138. Other entries performing well and finishing in the top statistical group at most of these locations include PPG-KB 1304, Starr, Cloud, Bomba, and Midnight.

As with past trials, the 2017 Kentucky bluegrass

trial consists of several ancillary locations testing for tolerance to various stresses. Shade tolerance was evaluated at Ames, IA, in 2018-2021 and again in 2022, with small statistical differences noted among entries. Billbug tolerance was another ancillary trial evaluated in 2021. Although differences were noted in billbug damage, no statistical differences were detected among the entries.

Traffic tolerance was evaluated at North

Brunswick, NJ, and Amherst, MA, in 2022. At Amherst, Acoustic, Barvette HGT®

, Yellowstone, and Prosperity

were the top entries for wear tolerance evaluated in May, July, and October. Te North Brunswick, NJ, site evaluated traffic tolerance in the spring, summer, and fall of 2022. Consistent top performers in each season at North Brunswick include Barvette HGT®

DLFPS-340/3550, DLFPS-340/3494, and BAR PP 7309V.

Data on summer patch (Magnaporthe poae)

was reported in 2022. Summer patch, one of the most devastating diseases on Kentucky bluegrass, was seen and data collected at Raleigh, NC. Barserati, Barvette HGT®

DLFPS-340/3550, PPG-KB 1304, and J-1138 finished with high tolerance on at least one rating date.

NTEP trials of specific grass species, like this bentgrass trial in Wisconsin, gather data on descriptive and performance characteristics.

Tall Fescue Fourth-year data from our latest tall fescue

trial, established in the fall of 2018, is now available. Tis new trial contains 132 entries, of which almost all are experimental. Year one data typically reflects the establishment rate, with year two data and beyond being a better reflection of future performance. Turfgrass quality ratings from 2022 can be

considered from five broad U.S. geographical regions – Northeast, Transition, Southeast, Midwest, and West. In five northeast U.S. locations (including Canada), entries such as Daybreak and Clash performed well and produced statistically significant turf quality ratings. In the southeast, performance varied over the four sites (Griffin, GA, Knoxville, TN, Mississippi State, MS, and Raleigh, NC), but the Raleigh site showed the most statistical significance. Capitan and Galactic scored the highest for turf quality at Raleigh, while Avenger II, Bonfire, RHF,
