 (DLFPS-236/3547) perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) has shown superior turf quality under all management levels and regions of the 2016 perennial ryegrass NTEP trials. It has shown excellent resistance to gray leaf spot and rust. The very dark green color persists throughout the year. Superior traffic and wear resistance makes it great for use in sports fields, golf courses, and home lawns. It has high density contributing to low Poa annua invasion. In overseeding and other areas its high salt tolerance makes it ideal for those difficult areas.

St. Augustine (vegetative) comes from North Carolina State

University’s (NC State) turfgrass

breeding and genetics program, under the direction of Susana Milla-Lewis, PhD. Sola follows in the footsteps of the long-standing cultivar Raleigh St. Augustinegrass from NC State and adds several improvements including aggressive growth, shade tolerance, drought tolerance, and superior sod strength—all in combination with turf quality. While comparable to Raleigh’s cold tolerance, Sola possesses better resistance to chinch bugs and gray leaf spot. A select group of producers from the North Carolina Sod Producers Association (NC SPA) formed a group called Turf Research North Carolina which made financial contributions over a six-year period to fund the research and development of Sola. All NC SPA participating growers contributing to the program will have exclusive access to the grasses when released in the state of North Carolina. Sola St. Augustine will be exclusively licensed through Sod Solutions for commercial production and marketing

TPI Turf News July/August 2023

 (3N1) tall fescue will see its first action in the fall of 2023 in the turfgrass seed market. This new variety has already landed on Virginia Tech University’s short list of most promising tall fescue varieties available. This designation is a testament not only to Endgame’s overall performance but also its key traits that set it apart from other tall fescue varieties. Endgame can be found in the latest NTEP trials dating back to 2018 when its designation was under its experimental name, 3N1. To name a few of Endgame’s exceptional qualities: it exhibits excellent brown patch resistance, rich dark green color, fine leaf texture, and strong density.

 (DLFPS-TF/3550) tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus) is an A-LIST cultivar for Low Input Turf and drought tolerance that also shows superior turf quality in all regions of the 2018 Tall Fescue NTEP trials. High resistance to the most serious diseases of tall fescue including brown patch, gray leaf spot, and Pythium blight contribute to its performance. Gallardo was developed with a dark green color, excellent density in all seasons, and the ability to withstand adversity. Superior wear tolerance and high seedling vigor make it ideal for sports turf and other high-wear areas.

 (DLFPS-TF/3552) tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus) has demonstrated superior turf quality across all regions of the 2018 Tall Fescue NTEP trials. Key to its high performance is resistance to brown patch and gray leaf spot. Essential 2 has shown excellent performance at short mowing height in addition to typical height of cut. It has a very fine leaf texture and dark green color. Tall fescues typically show good shade tolerance but Essential 2 shows superior performance. Rapid establishment and high drought tolerance round out its high performance.
