It’s every high school athlete’s dream to win a state championship. St. Elizabeth softball’s Riley Hammond got close to it her freshman year, when the Hornets made it to the state Final Four and placed third. Ham- mond says it’s her favorite memory so far of her high school career. “The goals I have set for myself keep me motivated to keep going no matter what. You can’t reach your goals if you give up,” Hammond said. “My goals for this season are to help my team get back to the Final Four and to hopefully win a state championship.”

“I continued to pitch throughout and was also going to phys- ical therapy to help it get better so that I could be ready for my high school season,” Hammond said. “I had been making prog- ress when I then broke my foot just a couple of weeks before our sophomore year.”

Hammond would return in time for the postseason but not at full strength. St. Elizabeth fell in the district title game. The loss stung Hammond and the Hornets but laid the groundwork for future success. Hammond was back fully healthy her junior season, and St. Eliz- abeth soared back to the district championship, defeating Norwood to move on to the state tournament. The postseason run would end “When you lose, you shouldn’t look at it as a loss, you should look at it as a learning opportunity to grow from your mistakes,” Ham- mond said. “The joy that comes from my sport is the opportunity to set goals for myself and then go out to compete and try to achieve
