It was a month into our marriage when a game of checkers near- ly did us in. As he yelled “king me” with an evil tone, I knew his competitive drive would serve our family well, but we should shift that focus to our future kids and what lied ahead for our family. We tossed that checkerboard game in the trash, vowed to never play again with each other and committed to only winning as a team.

In our nearly 14 years of marriage, we were blessed with four beautiful boys. It was Alan’s perfect scenario to continue to nurture the competitive drive he had, the strong hold sports had on him and the chance to still be in the game as a coach. football that began our journey as sports parents. If it involved a
