VI). The Holy Scriptures are God’s own revelation of His truth, and serve as our divine authority. In each generation there are certain persons whose lives reflect a love

for God’s Word in special ways. Edmund Lewis Patton was born in Ab- beville district, SC on February 15, 1827. His father, William Patton was a farmer and merchant. While on a journey to Tennessee, William Patton was murdered in 1833. His widow was left with four daughters and five sons, including Edmund who was 6 years old. At that time, Erskine had a Preparatory Department, as well as the col-

lege. Edmund enrolled when he was fourteen, and remained at Erskine for five or six years. He then enrolled at South Carolina College, and received the A.B. degree with highest honors in 1846. He then went to Yale and stud- ied modern languages, primarily French and Italian. In 1854 he was chosen as Professor of Ancient Languages at Erskine. And four years later, he was elected as President of Erskine (at age 31). He served for only two years, as classes were suspended because of the Civil War. During the war, at least 40 Erskine graduates lost their lives, including Edmund Patton’s younger brother, Col. A.K. Patton, who was killed in the battle of Shiloh, in 1862.
