We Can Honor The Past In How We Want To Shape The Future!
Like anything that comes into contact with the passing of time, so too does BRANDY GLASER

at the Presbyterial and Synod levels. I also am involved at our local church’s W.O.C. or Women’s Ministry. I ad- mit that I like to ask questions, lots of questions. I know that can get on some nerves when the questions tend to be, “Why do you do it this way, or that way?” “What is the history of this event?” “How does this help advance the goals of Women’s Minis- try?” I gather information by asking questions, not taking “just because” or “we’ve always done it this way” as an answer. I want to be able to buy- in with what we do and understand why we do it so that I can be a part of the history. Traditions play an important part
T
of tying in every generation of wom- en’s ministry together. It is one of the best ways for the ladies of churches, presbyterials, and at the synod level to share in the fellowship set forth by the generations before us. It also gives us a chance to benefit from the faithful worship and planning of our sisters in Christ from the past.
he past couple of years I have been blessed to be active on Women’s Ministries boards
the practical application of traditions. Just keeping the traditions the same only causes the true spirit of the tradition to become stagnant and they become lost to younger generations. Several of our board meetings have featured discus- sions about the tensions between keeping things the way they have been, and how to keep that while attracting younger ladies to Women’s Ministry events at all three levels (local, presbyterial, synodical). This involves also ensuring that our traditions are viable for future generations of women. I ask myself this question, “Are we fulfilling God’s will or woman’s will by keeping things the same as they have always been done?” Fiddler on the Roof comes to mind with the song Tradition! Things do change and we have to adapt. Our traditions can be honored in
wise revisions to ensure their future success. That’s why we write down the his- tory of the church every year, to look back at how things were done so that we can learn and improve. When Jesus walked the earth, he taught us that we cannot cling to the ways
of the past for the sake of man. We have to cling to the ways of the LORD for he is the TRUE tradition that leads us to everlasting life in HEAVEN!?
