...To Those Who Make It Happen | By Melora Cybul PERFORMING ARTS:

To my colleagues, peers, mentors, and friends: Thanks for that thing you did today which I took for granted. As venue managers, there

are many things we want guests in our venues to take

for granted; things we want to fade into the background

while the magic of an ex- perience and memories of an incredible event envelope them. You’ve undoubtedly heard it before,

and it is still true: the event begins well before the

house ever opens and extends beyond when the curtain falls. The same is true with the attention to a seemingly endless number of details a          Over the past several years, the care-free feeling of safety we took for

It’s not something we ever hope to need. Then there’s the clean toilets, clear

parking directions, lobby signage,     the list goes on and on. We work so hard to make sure the less glamorous elements are practically invisible, and when we are successful, it becomes easy to take this particular magic for granted.

While the volume of tiny details is astounding, it is not nearly as

remarkable as the people who work through those details. We also take each other for granted as well. We drive each other nuts, we challenge each other, and through a messy process we force the industry to move forward and evolve. So this one’s for you. I dedicate my Monday to the visionaries: the community leaders and administrators who have the power (or blind faith) to recognize need, see the future, and have the courage to set and clear a path upon which everyone can travel from concept to congratulations. I give my Tuesday to the dreamers: the architects, theatre consul-

tants, and acousticians who transform a crazy two-dimensional idea into a living place, a breath-taking hall, a warm home, and those who revitalize a space or give new life to an aging venue. 

I present my Friday appreciation to the magicians: artists, perform-

You are important and you are a vital member of this team. With your love and gentle prodding, you help us all change hats and see the grand system we are part of, in its messy and cre- ative glory. I dedicate my days to you, the

wearer of many hats. Maybe one day you’re a visionary, and the next day you’ve got your sleeves rolled up with the dreamers. No matter who you are and what role you take on, thank you for today, thank you for your yester- days, and I cannot wait to see what you accomplish in your tomorrows.

And each year at conference, I have the great joy of spending session after session with hundreds of brilliant leaders in this industry, each working hard to enhance how they spend their days and how they encourage their teams to thrive. Thanks again for that thing you did today which everyone took for
