LGBTQ Civic Spaces
with San Diego Pride has provided an inclusive space not just for our LGBTQ inclusivity doesn’t just support guests and generate reve-
nue. Study after study proves that creating a more welcoming envi- ronment for all leads to increased employee job satisfaction, minimizes San Diego County Fair employee, Ren Lerager, who has been em- ployed at the fair for 11 years: “The San Diego County Fair has traditionally prided itself on be- ing an inclusive space and has gone to great lengths to increase its standards of service to continue to provide an exemplary environment for both employees and guests,” Lerager said. “During my initial em- an issue and actually exposed me to the healthy and vibrant LGBTQ culture present in the community. Upon coming out as transgender at the Sensitivity Training provided by San Diego Pride, after a decade with the Fair, I received an extremely positive and supportive response. This extended beyond tolerance to genuine acceptance and reassur- ance that diversity should be our normality.”
OUT at the Fair has grown every year, and the feedback from the
region’s LGBTQ community couldn’t be better. The event has re- ceived awards, posts about the trans-inclusive facilities went viral on social media, and our community looks forward to the event every year. For us, OUT at the Fair isn’t just about bringing in gay dollars or slapping a rainbow on something and calling it allyship. This is about comprehensive, meaningful, community-informed inclusivity that is replicable, healing, and an act of community building. While we’ve focused on the ways to welcome the LGBTQ community, these steps, when seen through the lens of intersectionality, can readily be put into from the heart, then it truly has the power to spread love and joy to a community that has historically been ostracized. We hope you too bridges with and spaces for the LGBTQ community. FM
