GRIT. GOT IT? GET IT.

by Angela Duckworth, 50% of the adult pop- ulation has a grit scale less than 3.8. Venue managers scored an average grit score of 4.0 which is more than 70% of the popula- tion. Perhaps a higher level of grit is required to work in the venue management industry. While the data

showed the level of grit increased with years of service, there was a diver- gence of the passion and perseverance scores. In those with less experience, the passion score was high and perseverance lower. In the middle years, after a slight dip in passion, there was a steady increase in both characteristics. However, there was a drop in the passion level for those in the industry more than 20 years, yet the perseverance scores increased. In analyzing the data for the generations, the grit score for Millen-

nials ( b. 1981-2000) was the lowest, show a sharp rise with the Gen X  One could argue that this is due to age and lack of experience in

As venue managers with less experience are challenged with such obstacles as unruly artists, shows that lose money, riots at a country concert, unhappy guests waiting in long lines for security, mechanical breakdowns, food poisoning, and employees that don’t perform, they learn how to problem solve. GET GRIT According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average U.S. employ-

ee turnover is currently at 42%. In the Leisure and Hospitality Sector, consisting of arts, entertainment, recreations, accommodation, and food services, the turnover rate is almost double at 79%. ers who are creative, resilient, and unconventional. How can you hire those with grit?

Stay open and cu- rious – Ask questions beyond the resume that suggest perse- verance. Did they play sports, learn an instrument, and au- dition for a play? Let them try you

on for size – Let them shadow a man- ager during an event. See what goes on be- hind the scenes, what the responsibilities are, and how crisis is handled. Give them a project or problem to solve. Share your story –

Talk about your own story of stumbling

and succeeding. Give them a chance to identify what strengths they bring to you. Once hired, the venue can foster a culture of grit in its profession-

al development. The ability to bounce back from adversity and keep persistent with your passions when things get tough are traits of highly successful people. Senior managers can coach the junior manager using some of the
