IAVM MENTOR CONNECTOR PROFI

IAVM pairs industry mentors with mentees, those who are seeking the experience, leaders involved and many mentors have commented that they learn as much knowledge as

What would you like to achieve personally or profession- ally in the next year? I would like to obtain my CVP designation. I have been studying as much as possible, and I will take the exam in July at VenueConnect. I also am in the process of planning a regional meeting, so stay tuned!

If you weren’t working in the venue industry, what would your dream job be? Professional golfer. Or one of those people who tests vacation destinations.

Mentee Max Long, Event Coordinator, Virginia Beach Convention Center, Virginia Beach, VA

Why did you pursue this industry, or what led you to your

career in the venue industry? I initially decided to pursue venue management because I thought working concerts and events would be fun. As I got more involved in the industry, it was clear I made the right choice. I immediately felt welcomed by an amazing network of venue professionals. I am challenged with an ever-changing environment, and I am passionate about the work.

What is your background? What path did you take to your current position, and have you worked at other venues? I started as an usher at the Indiana University Auditorium and worked my way up to assistant guest services manager for IU Event Services. I then worked as a front-of-house manager at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, as patron services manager at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, and now as an event coordinator at the Virginia Beach Con- vention Center.

Could you tell us about a favorite event or the most memorable event you’ve worked? The ball was passed inbounds and with less than a second left, Christian Watford shoots a three … swish! As we all know, venue professionals can work long hours and power through occasional stressful situations, so how do you unwind away from work? I live seven minutes from the ocean, so I go to the beach quite a bit. I also like hanging out with friends and playing sports like golf and basketball.

What is your favorite place in your city or your favorite thing about where you live? I love the beach along the Chesapeake Bay. It is cleaner and less crowd- ed than the beach at the oceanfront. My favorite restaurants are right  get any fresher.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? Teleportation. Aren’t you tired of airlines?
