the way he does business. So, my responses to the questions they asked prob- ably included way more information than they wanted. I did not, however, want them to be surprised if the promoter rep did not arrive until mid-after- noon, or their caterer is a local restaurant delivering trays of food to the back door. Simple things you can easily deal with, but much better for everyone if you are anticipating them. As a member of IAVM, you see this open source concept through a

IAVM lives the essence of open source. VenueNet is a platform where questions are asked and answered, infor-

mation is shared, and upcoming events announced. It’s social, but it is also educational. You can target an audience for your posts, join communities, create a blog, and respond to others through either a private message or as part of the thread for the rest of the members to see and add onto. Finally, you can upload policy documents, job descriptions for open positions, or - ty police and conceal and carry polices, and cyber security. This has become an active platform and an indispensable value for many members, and open source is at the heart of its philosophy. Venue Data Source is the research arm of IAVM and has produced

your knowledge and grow your professional network. This is the annual VenueConnect issue of Facility Manager, so this is a good time to talk about the annual conference that brings operators of various venue types together from all over the world. Multiple education tracks are available to all at- tendees with sessions about safety and security, technology, marketing, op- erations, and event creation. While you may be tied to a certain venue type, you can attend a session that you think might be relevant to you even if  this allows you to be able to get the very most out of the event. The real value of attending VenueConnect or any live conference is to

share your knowledge and frustrations with other venue professionals. Not only is it therapeutic to share with people who truly understand the indus- try’s ups and downs, it is likely that the person you are talking to has either experienced something similar or will at some point. If nothing else, meeting new people within the business gives you an opportunity to create a network of people you can call when you need help with something. You also provide them a service when you’re the person they call when they are stumped. So, bring your business cards, bring your open mind, and bring your will- ingness to share and learn to Toronto for VenueConnect in July.
