point that our walls were rattling. David was the one who managed to get them to turn it down until other events left the building, with the promise that they could turn it up as loud as they wanted once the space was clear. His interactions are all this cool, calm, and suc- cessful.


His comfort in tough conversations probably comes from his per-


sonality. On occasion, he’s been known to say, with tongue in cheek, “not my circus, not my monkeys.” While he always takes ownership and pride in the events he’s covering during his shift, he doesn’t let the stress caused by situations out of his control eat at him like some of us might. He helps solve them and lets it go. That’s probably the number one reason he’s able to come back evening after countless evening refreshed, ready to take on whatever we throw his way, and do so in a way that leaves our clients requesting to work with him again the next time they are in town. Another coworker praises him on his ability to deescalate any


number of situations. He does so simply, with a big smile, and says “I understand (pauses) and thank you.” Often times, that’s all it takes. The other parties naturally calm down and respond with the same    with kindness” approach, and David is a text book example of that. It always comes from sincerity but is also quite savvy. When asked what he does that is unique, David talks about how he interacts with all of our clients when walking through the venue during his shift. It’s so easy to zoom from point A to point B without


 the opposite look easy. No matter how busy he is, he makes sure our guests feel like the number one reason we are here … and after all, isn’t that really what we’re here for? These lessons above are some of the more valuable reasons it’s im-


 venues who do incredible work without seeing their name in lights. Every time I hire a new person to the team, I look for someone we can all learn something from. Whether they are fresh out of college  looking for fewer hours as they start to look toward retirement, our coworkers come with a wealth of information, and you’d be doing    each time you interacted with them. David Jeppesen is truly an unsung hero here at the Oregon Con-


vention Center. After many long days for our full-time team, David comes in, takes the reins on any number of events, large and small, and orchestrates magic each and every time. This gives our team time to sleep, eat, or even just do laundry, and gives our clients a chance to work with one of the best team members I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. FM
