IAVM OFFERS A VARIETY OF OPEN SOURCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MEMBERS

I was listening to a podcast recently talking about open source. It de- scribed the Linux platform, which is available to anyone, and which Goo-  Fire, and many other smart devices. Open source describes something that is open for anyone to use and improve, with the understanding that these improvements will be made available to anyone else in the future. Open source would be the opposite of proprietary, which is more like the

- ence is one of the reasons that there are more apps available for Android users than there are for Apple users. This is a cool concept. Someone can use the software to make a smart


television without a license fee, but someone else can use this update to make a smart watch, or even another “smarter” television without having to pay a license fee. Of course, in Google’s case, they add in some proprietary soft- ware like Google Pay, Search, or Google Maps to many devices too, which require licensing to use, but that is another story. Open source seems a friendlier model than proprietary. I thought about how this might apply to our industry. In many ways,


venue management is an open source industry. I have always loved that we are an industry that shares information with each other toward the end of always getting better. Advancing shows, following up on promoter referenc-


es, and exchanging ideas is a part of the fabric of our industry. We’re friendly to each other, and generally interested in helping each other do better. We should all share information because it’s in our own best interest. We


 revenues and expenses, but we all have a stake in the live event business and we are all impacted when things go wrong. If there is an issue around an event in another part of the country then I will have to address my operation just in case something happens here. After all the tragedies in and around venues this past year, I expect I was not the only one reviewing our screening procedures, perimeter access, and security policies for days. Some people might wonder that, since I work for a venue management


company, I would want to keep information within my company. There   host the event better. We aren’t perfect and are glad to pass along the things we could have done better along with the things we did well. Again, we all make our livings from live events, and when something bad happens in any venue, it makes our next event that much more challenging and usually more expensive. I received a request for a promoter reference the other day from one of the major arenas in the industry. I like the promoter they asked about and trust him, but he is a smaller independent guy that has a number of quirks in
